What Is the Cost and Performance Impact of Using Corrugated Pipes?

In modern infrastructure engineering, material selection should be evaluated not only based on initial investment costs, but also on the total life cycle cost, including operation and maintenance expenses. Corrugated pipes based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP), thanks to their double-wall structure, provide both high strength and hydraulic efficiency, forming the foundation of sustainable infrastructure solutions.

How Is Cost Analysis Conducted in Infrastructure Investments?

When analyzing the economic sustainability of an infrastructure project, the Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCC) formulation is taken as the basis. Not only corrugated pipe prices, but also installation, maintenance, and the theoretical service life of the system should be included in the equation:

Kuzeyboru - kuzeyboru koruge br
  • Ci: Initial purchase cost (material cost)
  • Cinst: Installation and labor cost
  • Cm: Maintenance and operating cost
  • Cr: Renewal or rehabilitation cost
  • S: Scrap/residual value

While the lightweight structure of corrugated pipes reduces the Cinst item, their corrosion resistance minimizes the Cm and Cr values, providing an overall cost advantage over traditional rigid pipes (such as concrete pipes).

Long Service Life and Performance Criteria

The mechanical performance of corrugated pipes is directly related to ring stiffness and modulus of flexibility. The behavior of the pipe under external loads is defined by the ring stiffness (SN) formula determined according to the ISO 9969 standard:

Kuzeyboru - koruge boru kuzeyboru E: Elasticity modulus of the material, I: Moment of inertia of the wall, Dm: Mean diameter of the pipe.

Corrugated pipes with high ring stiffness maintain their structural integrity by distributing ground loads evenly around the pipe. In addition, thanks to their smooth inner surface, the Manning coefficient (n ≈ 0.009 – 0.010) is very low, allowing the use of smaller diameter pipes for the same flow rate.

Savings in Labor and Transportation Costs

One of the most significant advantages affecting corrugated pipe cost is logistics. The density of polymer-based pipes is approximately ρ ≈ 0.95 g/cm³, which is nearly one-third that of concrete. This provides:

  1. Reduced need for heavy construction equipment.
  2. Increased pipe length transported per shipment.
  3. Optimized storage space through nesting capability (telescopic loading).

These logistical advantages can provide indirect savings of up to 20% in the total project budget.

Resistance Duration Against Environmental Factors

The greatest risk factors in infrastructure systems are chemical corrosion and abrasion. Corrugated pipes provide full resistance against aggressive fluids with pH values between 2 and 12. OIT (Oxidation Induction Time) tests, which measure oxidation resistance, prove that these pipes have a service life of 50 to 100 years underground. In addition, thanks to their flexible structure against seismic movements, they minimize the risk of cracking and leakage commonly seen in rigid pipes.

Kuzeyboru Innovative R&D Investments

The studies carried out within the Kuzeyboru R&D Center focus on transforming theoretical data from polymer science into concrete performance parameters for infrastructure solutions. The projects conducted at our center mainly concentrate on improving the thermo-mechanical behavior of polymers and adapting circular economy models to industrial scale, particularly within the scope of “Green Transformation” strategies.

Through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations implemented in our R&D Center, the correlation between minimum raw material consumption and maximum ring stiffness (SN) is optimized. By combining academic literature with industrial innovation, Kuzeyboru continues to produce “value-added engineering” solutions for the infrastructure sector.
